I want everybody's position on this topic:
Option 1. Let's go back to the old way of college football. Polls & extensive bowl tie-ins. #1 hardly ever played #2.
Option B. The BCS is great.
Option 3. The BCS isn't perfect but it's probably better than Option 1.
Option M. Let's have a playoff already and be done with it.
Me, I'm in the Option 3M camp. The BCS does a better job than pure voting, which is what we had forever. But it still sucks because there's too much voting. Anyone see the coaches' ballots? From EDSBS.com:
Show me your scruples… If you weren’t quite convinced that this whole BCS system is a giant, steaming pile of elephant dung, you will be once you get through the coaches ballots. Among my favorties:
**Lllloyd Carr - the 4 L version - voted his Wolverines 21st, a full ten spots ahead of their actual ranking. Oregon, the team Lloyd could not stay within 30 points of at home, is not on his ballot at all.
**Dennis Franchione, apparently not content to fuck one football program in the ass, sent a parting shot to Hawaii, ranking them 22nd. Hal Mumme, seeing the team he wished he had, voted the Rainbow Warriors #1.
**Tommy Bowden threw darts at his ballot. Oklahoma landed in the 10 spot, four behind… Missouri. Mkay.
**The lone moralist in college football? Mack Brown, of course. Every coach except the Longhorns’ voted their team higher than their actual finish. As noted at DC Sports Blog: “The most stark moral offenders are: Lloyd Carr (10 spots difference), Mike Bellotti (8), Chris Petersen (6), Mike Riley (5), Randy Edsall (5), Tommy Bowden (5), Mike Leach (4), Ron Zook (4) and Phillip Fulmer (4). Frank Beamer (3) didn’t quite make this cut, but he was the only coach to vote Virginia Tech No. 2, meaning he tried to put his own team in the title game and no one else did.”
**Howard Schnellenberger? Marching to his own beat. USC is ranked behind… Boise State?
Option M
The BCS is a load of crap and we need a damn playoff NOW. I'm tired of all the nonsense but I heard the Rose Bowl contract goes to 2014 so we're screwed until then. What a joke. This is why I hate college football.

You don't hate college football.

I am not crazy about a playoff. I would not mind a +1. I think they should at least take a step towards a playoff, while keeping the BCS.
The best thing to do would be let 3 play 4, 5 play 6, and 7 play 8, and 9 play 10. Of course, the voters would then manipulate their votes to have the games the way they want them... Still, Mizou would not get screwed and the winner of the 3,4 game might have a shot at an AP title. with 3 playing 8 and 4 playing 10, they have not shot even if LSU/OSU both suck.
Even with the Harris poll, and the coaches poll, and the computer - the results still suck. That is what is crazy.

I really don't like the BCS, but not because it always gets it wrong, but because it is really no different than before. The only real difference now is that the #1 team is supposedly undisputed and they get a trophey. No more "we here at GA Tech are proud of our UPI National Championship..."
My question is this. If the pollsters are just going to "correct" previous wrongs (like UGA ranked above the potential SEC champion), why do we have ANY polls until the last one? Why do we not just go thru the season in a fog and with much speculation until the Dec 4th when all the pollsters get together and decide who they want in what game? Isn't that really what happened this year.
Dad had the best question of the year. After their last win on Nov 17th, Ohio State ultimately moved from: #7 to #5 to #3 to #1 the final 3 polls. Meanwhile UGA won on Nov 17th and Nov 24th, and went from #9 to #7 to #4 to #5 in the final 3 polls. What the hell did OSU do that we did not do except sit on their ass and not play? Dad says the BCS should have a kindergarten poll included in the mix. On that poll, when #1 and #2 lose, surely #3 and #4 move into their spots.
Either way, this "correction" bullshit is nothing but corruption and collusion.
